For some time now I’ve had my desk wired up using an Elgato Thunderbolt 2 dock. It’s the model that looks like the one pictured above.
.. and it worked perfectly on my Mac, all the way up to 10.15 Catalina. At that point I put off upgrading my OS because the Elgato website notes it as “Currently Not Compatible” with Big Sur.
Eventually, though, I needed to upgrade Xcode, and that required MacOS 11. And so, resigned to possibly chucking the dock in the bin (/ebay), I went ahead.
Here’s the good news: at least a large part of it works fine. As I type this, the following is connected:
- 3x USB ports
- HDMI, driving 2560×1440
.. and I can see an Ethernet card listed in System Report, though I don’t have any way to test that port at the moment.
So, long story short: I can only assume that some Elgato software utility might be incompatible, but the dock itself seems to (at least mostly) work. If you’re in the same situation – or considering buying one cheaply – it’s worth a try.
